DAREBIN ARTS RESIDENCY

Hello! We’re VIMH – a community network making bold and original new work in Naarm. You can find out a bit more about us here. Right now, you can find us working at Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre as part of a new program being piloted by Darebin Arts, which is supporting outstanding independent companies with a community-focused practice to be in residence. We are *thrilled* to be participating in this pilot alongside supernovas PO PO MO CO.

The most important bit of this opportunity (for us) is that we get to share it with our community (you). We are doing this in all sorts of different ways, so keep an eye on the info below and on our social media channels for updates and announcements.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

Speakeasy Scratch Night: Something Else

Tuesday 27 May, 7pm-9pm

This community-centred scratch night of performance and conversation will focus on the provocation “something else” and what it might mean when considering the possible futures ahead of us. Our hope is to explore its potential in artmaking, storytelling and future-building through our featured artists and you, our audience.

Artist Line-Up

Bridget Webster, Bridie Noonan and Oscar O’Brien: Worms and Conditions
When the rent on their decaying townhouse is raised, a couple open their doors, lease, and eventually relationship, to a stranger. The three of them attempt to navigate desire and instability as the foundation of the house is consumed by worms.

Olivia Staaf: Undying
Undying follows an eccentric recluse and his assistant on their journey to defy mortality. The play delves into the untouchable, often absurd lives of the ultra-wealthy and the influence they wield over the public perception of longevity science.

Max Bower: Make Time
An exploration of the pressures of normative time and how one might find comfort in time. Fighting back against narratives of crunch culture and burnout, it asks the question: is there a better way of working with time?

Event info (including link for tickets) can be found here.

THINKING GROUND

VIMH is throwing open the doors of our residency studio every Friday and you are invited.

THINKING GROUND is a space for artists to gather and connect, to spend time collectively unpacking our role in responding to current and future social, environmental and political need. We are approaching this time together with a fundamental belief in our own power as a community and our capacity to model new ways of living and gathering in the face of crisis and we will facilitate these conversations through this aspirational framework.

REGISTER HERE.

FRIDAY SESSION STRUCTURE

8.30am – 9.30am: Merri Creek Walk + Clean-Up
10am – 1pm: Coffee, Cake and Conversation
1pm – 2pm: Lunch
2pm – 5pm: Co-Working

This structure is modular – you can join us just for the morning clean-up, or you might only be able to get to us after lunch. Sign-up for each Friday happens on a weekly basis and you can indicate then which sessions you are able to attend. Registration is free and is just to give us a sense of numbers – you’re free to come and go even within the sessions you book.

For more information about the content of these sessions, including the origin of the program, you can head here

We really hope we get the chance to spend time with you in one or both of these ways. Very importantly – no artistic experience is necessary to participate in either of these opportunities. If you’re interested in these ideas and want to contribute to these conversations, then we’d love to have you.

As always, shoot any Qs through to thevoiceinmyhands@gmail.com.
